Supervisor Nelson expresses alarm over high rates of suspension

Henrico County Supervisor Tyrone Nelson was quoted at length in an article in the Richmond Times Dispatch about the high rates of black students who are suspended or expelled from school in the county:
"Needless to say, we are deeply disappointed and remain very concerned," state Sen. A. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico, and Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson said in a letter to Henrico Superintendent Patrick Russo.

"We would ask you to please explain why African-American students seem to be punished disproportionately and what you plan to do to address this situation," they said in the letter delivered Thursday.

Nelson, who was elected to the Henrico Board of Supervisors last year, wants more answers.

"What is the problem? Where is the problem?" he asked. "Is it a particular school? Is it a particular principal?"
